5 Things You Can Do If Your Air Conditioner Isn’t Running Right

When it comes to taking care of your air conditioning system, if you notice that something isn't working right, then there are some things that you can check out. For example, if your air conditioner is not blowing out enough cold air, or is making a funny sound, there are a few things you should do.

Make Sure the Breaker Is Engaged

The first thing you need to do when your air conditioner isn't running right is make sure your system is getting power. Make sure that the unit is plugged in. Then, go to your breaker box and make sure that it hasn't been tripped. The breaker box can easily get tripped, and if the air conditioning is the only thing connected to the breaker box, it will be easy not to even notice that the breaker has tripped. Turn the breaker back on and see if that fixes the issue with the air conditioner.

Verify the Thermostat

If your system isn't blowing out cold air, or isn't turning on, check the thermostat and make sure that it is programmed correctly. It is easy to turn the thermostat up so high that the air conditioning will not engage. The temperature range for the room needs to be lower than the actual air temperature for the air conditioning system to come on. You should also make sure that you didn't choose the option for the fan to just blow air through the house, instead of using the full capacity of your air conditioning system.

Change the Filter

A dirty filter can impact various aspects of your air conditioning system. If your AC system isn't running and performing as it should, change out the air filter. You would be surprised at how many issues a clean air filter can fix.

Melt the Ice on the System

Sometimes, ice builds up on the air conditioning system. When ice builds up on the air condition system, there is no way that it is going to be run correctly. You'll need to melt the ice, either by turning off the system and allowing the ice to melt manually, or by using a heating source, such as a hair dryer, to melt the ice off the system. Once the ice has melted, your system should start working properly again.

Clean the System

Your HVAC system may not be working correctly because it is dirty. If the entire system is covered in dirt and dust, all that little debris could be preventing your system from operating as it should. Cleaning it up may be all you need to do to get your system working properly again.

When it comes to taking care of your air conditioner, there are a few things you can check out in order to see if you can fix the problem yourself. If these fixes don't work, call an appliance repair professional for assistance.
